History

Named after the Huaco Indians who were the first inhabitants, in 1837 the Texas Rangers arrived with the intention of building a fort at Waco Village. The Rangers spent three weeks constructing a road through the woods, building a bridge over Cow Bayou, only to decide the outpost was too far from any white settlements to offer protection.
In 1848, two years after Texas statehood to a group of businessmen and by 1849, George B. Erath had laid out the first streets of Waco. By August 1856, Waco had been incorporated. Ranchers and cattlemen soon began driving their cattle north, using the ever more popular Chisholm Trail, herding their stock across the Brazos River. In 1870, a suspension bridge was opened across the Brazos and a year later, the Waco and Northwestern Railroad reached the thriving town. Followed by the Cotton Belt, and then by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroads, this effectively making Waco a hub for commerce in Texas.

In the mid to late 1800’s, the lush soil of the Brazos Valley drew plantation owners from the Deep South. As the turn of the century rolled in, Waco had become one of the world’s leading producers of cotton, adding to its population and reputation as a great place to do business. By 1894, the first Cotton Palace Pageant was held in Waco at the sumptuous Cotton Palace. Although the Cotton Palace no longer exists, the Pageant that was named for it is still held each year in April.
