History

In 1872, the Katy railroad was the first to enter Texas from the north after the Civil War and in 1882, a station was established six miles south of Waco. John Allison Warren bought the township that developed around the rail station from John Blydenburgh in 1893 and named it Hewitt after a director of the Katy Railroad then proceeded to put in a lumberyard to help settlers establish homesteads. During the first 90 years the area was a farming community, where the area was rich with black soil and cotton, cattle and corn thrived. By 1912, there were several businesses including a cotton gin and two general stores as well as banks and a post office.
Hewitt continued to grow and was incorporated in June of 1960 and by the 1970’s growth exploded more than 7% in a single year. It was also rated the fastest growing community in the country. Today, it’s still growing and has become McLennan County’s second largest municipality while keeping its identity separate from Waco.
